Smart Surveillance: AI Cameras Identify Blacklisted Persons

The collaboration between the Pune railway division and JioThings Limited, a subsidiary of Jio Platforms Limited, has resulted in the deployment of four AI-powered cameras aimed at enhancing surveillance capabilities at the station. These cameras, strategically positioned at the entrance, exit, and Public Reservation System (PRS) areas, have showcased promising results in recognizing blacklisted individuals and touts. The project, initiated last August, marks a significant step forward in leveraging technology to bolster security measures within the railway network.

In the recent weekly surveillance data release, it was revealed that from February 26 to March 3, approximately 9,625 individuals visited the PRS premises. Among them, 7,311 were repeat visitors, while 2,314 were new entrants. Additionally, the data indicated that around 1.1 percent of the total visitors were observed wearing masks, providing insights into compliance with safety protocols amidst the ongoing pandemic.

Apart from facial recognition capabilities, the AI cameras also offer insights into visitor behavior, such as dwell time analysis and queue management assessment. Railway officials have emphasized the ongoing testing phase, during which the cameras are being fine-tuned to accurately identify railway staff and efficiently manage queues at the PRS. Furthermore, plans are underway to expand surveillance infrastructure, with 130 regular CCTV cameras set to replace faulty ones, as confirmed by Divisional Signal and Telecom Engineer Piyush Kumbhar, underscoring a concerted effort to modernize railway security systems.
