Opera's Strategic Move: Opera One, the AI Browser, Marks a Turning Point for iOS Users

Opera has unveiled plans to launch a new AI-powered browser, Opera One, specifically for iOS users in Europe. This announcement follows Apple's decision to permit alternative browser engines on iOS, complying with the European Digital Markets Act (DMA). Previously, Apple mandated the use of its WebKit browser engine for third-party browsers, including its own Safari. The DMA will now allow developers to submit non-WebKit-based browsers, offering users a more diverse selection. Opera aims to provide an AI-centric alternative to Safari with Opera One, taking advantage of the newfound flexibility in browser engine choices.

Jørgen Arnesen, EVP Mobile at Opera, expressed enthusiasm for the DMA-induced changes, stating, “We intend to deliver on this with the AI-centric Opera One for iOS.” Arnesen also highlighted Apple's commitment to implementing a browser choice screen for iOS, making it easier for users to set their preferred browser as default. The new browser is set to debut in March, coinciding with the DMA rollout in the European Union. While the changes currently apply to Europe, Opera encourages Apple to extend these freedoms globally. Additionally, Opera hinted at a forthcoming "major investment" in a key AI infrastructure project in Europe, further underscoring its commitment to AI innovation.

Last year, Opera introduced its Aria browser AI and revamped its flagship desktop browser, naming it Opera One—the same moniker given to the upcoming iOS browser. Opera One is designed to be future-ready for a "generative AI-based future," showcasing the company's dedication to advancing AI technologies in its browser offerings.
