OpenAI is taking a significant step in the widespread adoption of Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs) by allowing users of ChatGPT to seamlessly incorporate them into their conversations. As of today, subscribers to ChatGPT's paid service can introduce GPTs by simply typing "@" and selecting a desired GPT from the available list. The chosen GPT will possess a comprehensive understanding of the ongoing conversation, offering users the flexibility to bring in different GPTs tailored to various use cases, each armed with contextual knowledge from previous discussions.
"This allows you to add relevant GPTs with the full context of the conversation," OpenAI announced via a tweet, emphasizing the enhanced conversational integration. This development follows closely on the heels of the GPT Store launch, an OpenAI marketplace within the ChatGPT dashboard where users can access a variety of GPTs. The GPT Store aims to simplify the creation of GPTs, emphasizing that coding expertise is not a prerequisite. Notable offerings in the store include a trail recommender from AllTrails, a code tutor from Khan Academy, and a content designer from Canva.
OpenAI envisions introducing a monetization system for developers interested in selling access to their GPTs. However, the company faces challenges as data from Similarweb indicates that custom GPTs constitute only about 2.7% of ChatGPT's global web traffic, with a decline observed since November. Additionally, moderation proves challenging, evident in the influx of inappropriate GPTs, such as sexually suggestive chatbots and political campaign impersonations, prompting OpenAI to employ a combination of human and automated review for content screening. As the GPT ecosystem grows, moderation concerns are anticipated to become increasingly pronounced.
