Microsoft has introduced a new feature on Bing Search called 'Generative Captions,' leveraging OpenAI's latest language model, GPT-4, to provide users with personalized snippets and summaries of individual web pages. While the rebranding of Bing Chat to Copilot has concluded, Microsoft continues to enhance Bing Search with innovative capabilities.
In a recent blog post, Microsoft explained that 'Generative Captions' analyze search queries, extract information from web pages, and present easily digestible snippets. Powered by OpenAI's advanced language model, GPT-4, this feature can also generate AI-generated summaries of web pages. Notably, the generated captions are tailored to each query, offering unique snippets based on user preferences and search intent.
Microsoft emphasizes that the captions may not mirror the exact words from the web page. Instead, Bing employs a combination of signals and techniques to produce these concise and informative snippets. Website owners have the option to opt out of 'Generative Captions' by using the NOCACHE and NOARCHIVE tags; however, this process may require manual implementation.
In addition to this feature, Microsoft has introduced updates to its 'Bing Webmaster' tools, providing website owners with insights into their traffic from search queries and Bing Chat.
This latest enhancement to Bing Search serves as a potential alternative to Google's experimental 'Notes' feature for search results and Discover articles. Google's 'Notes' feature enables users to manually add notes with images and stickers for individual web pages, facilitating sharing with others to provide insights into the content of the website.
