"Lifting Spirits: Seniors Embrace AI Companionship with Chatty Robot

In a pioneering effort to tackle loneliness among older Americans, Apple has introduced ElliQ, a tabletop device utilizing artificial intelligence (A.I.) to engage in human-like conversations. Residents like Joyce Loaiza, 81, in a Florida senior community are among the first to experience ElliQ's companionship. Designed by Intuition Robotics, the device resembles a small table lamp with a head that lights up and swivels, engaging users in tailored conversations ranging from the profound to the lighthearted.

ElliQ goes beyond mere conversation, offering features such as joke-telling, music playing, and providing inspirational quotes. It also leads exercises, monitors health, and offers reminders for medication and hydration. While its creators emphasize that ElliQ is not a substitute for human contact, the device has shown promising results, with an average user interacting with it more than 30 times daily, reporting reduced levels of loneliness. However, concerns have been raised by experts like Julianne Holt-Lunstad from Brigham Young University, who cautions that while A.I. solutions may offer short-term benefits, they could discourage individuals from seeking meaningful human connections.

Intuition Robotics CEO Dor Skuler, inspired by his widowed grandfather's need for companionship, conceptualized ElliQ to adapt to each senior's personality and interests. The device has been distributed by assistance agencies in various states, with a goal to deploy over 100,000 units within five years. The $600 per year individual cost and $250 installation fee enable seniors to access this innovative solution, providing companionship and interaction for those who may be isolated or lacking social networks.
