The revelation during CES 2024 keynote in Las Vegas, Samsung has introduced a host of enhancements and functionalities to its SmartThings home automation platform. Among the highlights is the introduction of Now Plus, a dynamic dashboard screen set to grace selected Samsung TVs. This screen, designed to activate as users approach, provides vital information about smart home devices, including real-time statistics such as indoor temperature. Complementing this is a novel "quick panel" featuring convenient shortcuts for managing connected devices and performing tasks like locating misplaced smartphones.
Expanding its SmartThings capabilities, Samsung has introduced a compelling "map view," reminiscent of Amazon's Map View. This interactive map provides users with a comprehensive layout of their homes, indicating the precise locations of various smart devices such as washing machines and refrigerators. Users can manually create these maps or leverage existing floor plans with the assistance of photos or a lidar-enabled Samsung device, like the upcoming Ballie robot or the new JetBot robot vacuum.
Adding a touch of whimsy or intrigue, depending on one's perspective, the new SmartThings maps incorporate "AI characters" representing family members and pets within the household. These animated avatars dynamically respond to real-time conditions, showcasing reactions such as simulated sweating if the ambient temperature rises uncomfortably. Generating these maps requires the use of the SmartThings app on a smartphone or tablet. Once crafted, the maps seamlessly integrate with supported Samsung TVs, the screen of the Samsung Family Hub smart fridge, and Samsung's M8 monitors, providing users with a comprehensive and interactive overview of their smart home environment.
