In a groundbreaking achievement for the Indian startup ecosystem, Krutrim, an artificial intelligence (AI) venture founded by Ola's Bhavish Aggarwal, has successfully raised $50 million in its first funding round. This valuation propels Krutrim to unicorn status, marking it as the fastest Indian startup to achieve this milestone within just a year of its inception. The funding round was led by Matrix Partners India, a notable supporter of Aggarwal's previous ventures, Ola and Ola Electric.
Krutrim, which translates to "artificial" in Sanskrit, distinguishes itself by focusing on linguistic diversity. The startup has been diligently training a large language model on various Indian languages, along with English. With plans to unveil a voice-enabled conversational AI assistant adept in multiple Indian languages, Krutrim aims to release a beta version of its chatbot to consumers next month. Following this, the startup will roll out APIs for developers and enterprises, coupled with ambitions to manufacture AI-optimized chips in-house.
Founder Bhavish Aggarwal emphasized the significance of building India's AI capabilities, stating, "India has to build its own AI, and at Krutrim, we are fully committed towards building the country’s first complete AI computing stack." The successful closure of Krutrim's first funding round not only validates the potential of its innovative AI solutions but also reflects investors' confidence in the startup's ability to drive meaningful change globally. This investment comes at a crucial time when global investors are actively seeking opportunities in AI breakthroughs, anticipating significant returns from startups leading the AI revolution. Despite India's burgeoning startup ecosystem, it has yet to make a substantial impact in the global AI race, with Krutrim emerging as a frontrunner in this transformative journey.
