OpenAI has unveiled a revamped board of directors and a fresh governance framework in response to recent upheaval that saw CEO Sam Altman ousted, briefly joining Microsoft, and then swiftly reinstated at the AI research organization. Altman will be rejoining the board alongside three new independent directors: Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nicole Seligman, former executive vice president and general counsel at Sony Corporation, and Fidji Simo, CEO and chair of Instacart.
Bret Taylor, Chair of the OpenAI board, expressed his enthusiasm about the new additions, stating that their wealth of experience and leadership will play a pivotal role in overseeing OpenAI's growth and ensuring that its mission of benefiting all of humanity with artificial general intelligence is upheld. The previous board members who resigned during the tumultuous period include Helen Toner of Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, and entrepreneur Tasha McCauley.
Despite the challenges, Altman and Greg Brockman will persist in leading OpenAI as CEO and president respectively, with the support of the new board chaired by former Salesforce CEO Bret Taylor. The decision was made after an independent review by law firm WilmerHale determined that while Altman's termination was within the prior board's authority, his actions did not warrant removal. With a refreshed board, reinforced policies, and a commitment to transparency, OpenAI is poised to advance under a reinvigorated system of oversight and accountability, as emphasized by Taylor's acknowledgment of the organization's significant role in stewarding transformative technologies for the global good.
